Looking for Airpark or Fly-In community in Kansas

Posts 4 | Created 2/3/2010 11:27 AM by Brian Wink | 1

Greetings all! I am looking to move back to Kansas from Chicago this summer. I am hoping to find out what options are available for Fly-In or Airpark communities where I can fly home, and park the plane at my house.

The only one that I have found so far is BentonAirpark.com, attached to Stearman Field near Wichita. It looks as if it would be a good alternative, but I was also looking to see if there might be any other locations to look at. I had a great conversation with them today, and that may work. If is just that is is not near our family in KC.

I would like to know what options, if any, are available closer to Kansas City, as that is where we are from originally. We were thinking anything between KC and Topeka area would work.

Particulars are that I am looking for something that is paved, and something that I can get in and out of in a light twin or turboprop. Also, needs to have an IFR approach.

I also left a message for KCDOT Dept of Aviation today on the same topic. Looking forward to your thoughts.

There are not many airparks in Kansas. The FAA discourages through the fence operations at Federally funded airports and your criteria of a paved surface with an IFR approach eliminates all of the public use privately owned airports that I am aware of. There seems to be a large waiting list at all the Kansas City airports for hangar space, except perhaps Downtown (MKC). They are finishing a t-hangar project. You might find hangar space and a near by home at one of the airports just outside Kansas City. I would suggest contacting the Johnson County Airport Authority to see if there is space at IXD or OJC. There are luxury homes within 3 or 4 miles of both of these facilities. Benton is the airpark in Kansas that meets all of your requirements, as far as we know.

Thank you so much for the response. I'll follow up with IXD and OJC with regards to hangar space availability. Close to a good GA in fine with me. Thanks so much for your response!

There is an aviation airpark 7 miles south of OJC. Upscale homes and building sites. All homes appear to have an attached hangar to the home. Nice place. It is my understanding that homes are in the $400+ range. Beautiful grass runway. I realize your post is several months old, but I hope you find what you are looking for. Good luck.

Ooops! I just noticed that you are looking for something with a paved runway and IFR approach. This airport probably isn't for you then. OJC has beautiful subdivisions very close to the airport.
