pquinn: Excellent post. Pedestrian behavior is garnering some long-overdue formal attention. Have you seen the "death map" for NYC pedestrian fatalities? 8/17/2010 12:19 PM
DeniseP: The 'go where you want to go' is important. Also important is the maintenance or safety - perceived or otherwise - of the sidewalks.

I walk to work upon occasion and there are certain blocks that I won't take because of the neighborhoods or older sidewalks that are so overgrown that they're non-existent. I also have to deal with rubbish - tree limbs, etc - blocking the sidewalks. Or overhanging trees that force you to be a contortionist to get through the sidewalk without having to get onto the grass ( A downer when it's wet or damp and you're trying to avoid wet shoes).

Sometimes I swear I need to carry a hand pruner when I walk so I can cut my way through :)

Or there are whole blocks and stretches of streets where there is no sidewalk at all. And a pedestrian either walks on the grass, in the gutter (very dangerous) or finds a parallel side street to walk in the street but on a less busy street.

The same holds true for bicyclists. My mom rides her bike all over town and she, quite often, has to take very 'out of the way' routes to stay on sidewalks or to ride on less busy streets.

I was in Vancouver lately and it was very refreshing to see dedicated bike lanes on some streets - even streets that we would classify as a near highway or a major connecting link. Vancouver is a very bicycle and pedestrian friendly town. 8/18/2010 9:05 AM

jklinkon: How can the city manager and councilmen of Arma dictate to the KDOT where they want the corridor to go. Why did you not get input from the landowners affected by the highway!!!!!!! We have farmed this land since 1920+- and would like input into this decision to cut our farm directly into two parts and destroy our lifetime investments. Also the proposal to turn US highway 71 in Missouri into an interstate was taken into consideration. 7/24/2010 5:06 PM
Priscilla Petersen: Response from KDOT: Although KDOT will make the final selection of the corridor location for the U.S. 69 expansion in Crawford County, we have actively sought input from local stakeholders, elected officials and the general public. One of our key advisory groups consists of officials from Arma, Girard, Frontenac, Pittsburg and Crawford County. KDOT has held several public meetings in previous years, and in spring of 2011 will host another public meeting concerning the most recent changes to the Crawford County Corridor. We continue to encourage questions and comments from all citizens during the preliminary engineering process. Thanks for your input. 7/28/2010 9:24 AM
