What is K-TOC?
K-TOC is an transportation-centered online community—a professional networking site for public works directors, airport managers, transit operators, city and county engineers, commercial freight operators, road supervisors, short-line rail operators and all transportation-minded citizens. K-TOC is a virtual meeting place and conversation center for everyone in the transportation community in Kansas.
What are the benefits of K-TOC membership?
The content hosted on K-TOC is accessible to everyone, but only registered members can post to the site and use the community’s member-connection features. Registration permits members to participate in real-time discussions among transportation stakeholders from around the state on a variety of transportation topics. Any registered member can participate in any group discussion, but only registered members can participate: Unregistered visitors are not permitted to post comments, questions, suggestions or any other content to the community. K-TOC provides registered members with immediate access to a network of peers, and to the cumulative institutional and professional knowledge contained in that network. K-TOC’s member map permits members to easily identify other members with similar interests and concerns, and facilitates simple, quick communication between members.
Is K-TOC just for KDOT employees?
No. K-TOC is operated and administered by employees of the Kansas Department of Transportation, but it is a community for all transportation-minded citizens. Anyone is free to join K-TOC and participate in its discussions.
What will K-TOC do with my registration information?
From time to time KDOT may contact you with information about topics in which you have indicated an interest, but your personal information will never be shared with a third party. K-TOC will sometimes collect non-personal, aggregated information about the composition of the community to better shape K-TOC content.
What will other K-TOC members do with my information?
Other members of K-TOC might contact you within the community to get you involved in a group, discuss common professional challenges, or share ideas and experiences based on your selected interests. (See “Private Messaging” below.) By registering with K-TOC, you agree to and accept such contact, and gain the right to contact other members yourself. All such contacts are carried out within the community; members do not have access to other members’ email addresses.
How can I update my registration information
or change my photograph?
Click on “My Profile” on the navigation bar on the left side of any community page. At the top of your Profile page are three links—“My Profile,” “My Media” and “Personal Info”—that permit you to change any information, including your photograph, you’ve posted to K-TOC.
Can I change my username?
Not yet. The ability to change one’s username will be part of the next platform update, which is expected soon.
What if I’ve forgotten my password?
Click here to have your password emailed to you or contact the community manager at ktoc@ksdot.org
Why am I asked to provide my location twice?
K-TOC’s GeoMap, which permits members to generate a sorted geographical map of community members, runs separately from the rest of the community platform as a self-contained utility based on Google Maps. K-TOC asks for your location once in order to incorporate it into your Member Profile, and again to incorporate it into the People Map. This duplication will be corrected in a future update of the platform.
Why doesn't the calendar on the homepage display events?
The Kansas Transportation Calendar is a Google Calendar, which doesn't display event information in its default "Month" display. To see calendar items, switch the viewing mode to "Week" or "Agenda," or simply click on the Google icon at the bottom of the calendar to be taken to the full calendar page.
Why don't some videos play in the preview pane?
The preview pane seen in some K-TOC video postings does not function in all browsers. To view any video on K-TOC, click the "Download" button, which will open the video in your media player.
What are K-TOC groups?
K-TOC groupsare discussion forums. Each group hosts multiple conversations on a separate topic, and will feature informative material related to that topic.
How do I join groups that interest me?
To subscribe to a K-TOC group, click the subscription box just below the group title banner. Once subscribed, users will receive immediate notification (by RSS feed or email) of new posts to all of the conversations in that group. Users may also subscribe to any individual conversations within a group.
How do I post materials to the group?
Files may be posted to any group by clicking the “Submit a File” button below the list of discussions on the group home page.
Why can’t I post links in discussion groups?
The software on which K-TOC runs was originally developed for IT professionals sharing information about coding projects. Those engineers wanted the discussion groups to display only the original code—including HTML. Thus the groups don’t support hyperlinks. To steer readers to a site of interest, simply post the relevant URL and it will be treated as a link..
How can I start a group?
We’re eager to host as many conversations as possible. Requests to start a group should be posted in the “New Groups?” discussion in the KTOC group. If the subject is transportation-related, we’ll get the group up as fast as possible. We ask that anyone starting a group be prepared to further the conversation in the group and nurture its development.
How can I start a blog?
K-TOC is interested in hosting transportation blogs written by K-TOC members. If you have an idea for a regular blog on a topic of interest to transportation professionals, contact the community manager at ktoc@ksdot.org.
What is Private Messaging?
The Private Messaging system enables users to contact one another one-on-one without publicizing their personal email addresses. K-TOC registered users have the ability to send and receive messages from one another within the community. When another member sends you a message, you will receive a notification of the message at the email account you provided upon registration. Private messages can be accessed at your K-TOC Inbox, available on the My Community page.
What are tags?
Tags are a useful way to search for conversations about similar subjects. The tag cloud complements the normal search system, which searches only for certain words or phrases or posts by specific users. Tags are attached to each discussion when the group is founded. For example, the T-LINK group is tagged “tlink,” and also “funding.” Doing so will categorize this discussion with all other discussions that have matching tags, whether or not they have the word “T-LINK” in them.
How do I use tags?
Clicking on “Browse Tags” in the top of the menu will take you to an overview page with a “tag cloud.” This cloud allows you to see which tags are the most popular: The larger the word, the more times it has been used on discussions within the board. Click on the word to see all related postes.
What are the “thumbs-up” icons?
K-TOC members have the ability to express approval or appreciation of any post or any other member by clicking the “thumb-up” icon. Users with the highest number of thumbs-up are recognized on the Top Contributors page.
How do I cancel my K-TOC membership?
To cancel your K-TOC membership, contact the community manager at ktoc@ksdot.org.
